Perkins Coie Joins Biglaw Exodus: Fourth Firm to Close China Office in Eight Months

Biglaw Firms are continuing to withdraw their offices from the Chinese market. Following the recent announcement of Kirkland & Ellis downsizing within China, another heavyweight in the field, Perkins Coie, has decided to follow suit.

According to a report by Law.com International, Perkins Coie has become the fourth Biglaw firm to shutter an office in China within the last eight months. In a statement regarding the closure of its Shanghai office, the firm maintained its ongoing commitment to the Chinese market, expressing that it remains attracted to China’s vibrant business and technology sectors.

The Shanghai office of Perkins Coie housed a small number of lawyers, with three based primarily in the U.S., along with several patent consultants. Of note, the firm still retains at least one other office operating within China, located in Beijing, and an office in Taipei.

Perkins Coie’s decision has resulted in an unfortunate displacement of employees, to whom we extend our best wishes. As the trend continues, the question remains as to which Biglaw firm will next bid farewell to its Chinese offices.
