Leading figures in Michigan politics, Daire Rendon, a former Republican State Representative, and Matthew DePerno, an ex-Trump-backed attorney general candidate, have been charged following alleged efforts to tampering with the state’s voting machines. The charges come in the wake of the 2020 US Presidential Election and were delivered in Oakland County’s Sixth Circuit Court.
The charges have been laid as part of an ongoing investigation into attempts by supporters of the former President, Donald Trump, to interfere with the voting machines. Rendon is facing two charges, including conspiracy to commit undue possession of a voting machine and false pretenses. DePerno, on the other hand, is facing a total of four charges. His charges include undue possession of a voting machine, conspiracy to commit undue possession of a voting machine, conspiracy to commit unauthorized access to a computer system, and willful damage of a voting machine.
DJ Hilson, the special prosecutor, has reassured the public that the charging decision was the result of a careful and thorough decision-making process executed by an independent citizen’s grand jury. Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel, whose office started this investigation, affirmed in a statement the seriousness of the allegations.
This case isn’t an isolated one, with similar investigations have taken place across the country. Earlier this year, a county clerk in Colorado was indicted for tampering with election information. Additionally, Fulton County, Georgia’s District Attorney Fani Willis requested the impanelment of a special grand jury to scrutinize attempts to disrupt the administration of the 2020 election within the state. Recent reports suggest that an indictment against Trump concerning this investigation will be announced soon
