The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has recently issued revised guidance on cybersecurity programs for nuclear power reactors – the first significant update in over a decade. The NRC has specifically updated Regulatory Guide 5.71 titled, “Cyber Security Programs for Nuclear Power Reactors” (Revision 1).
This modified guidance offers explicit instructions on meeting cybersecurity requirements as described in Section 73.54 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The section deals with the protection of digital computer and communication systems and networks that might be associated with safety, security, and emergency preparedness functions at nuclear power reactor facilities.
As the digital landscape rapidly evolves and various cyber threats continue to emerge, it is paramount for firms associated with nuclear power to maintain up-to-date cybersecurity protocols. In this context, the revised guidance from NRC brings forward much-needed direction, explicitly focusing on safeguarding vital digital assets from potential threats.
Many prior measures were already in place under the aforementioned Regulatory Guide. However, this update is expected to further enhance the level of security within nuclear power operations whilst providing a clearer roadmap for entities required to follow such protocols.
