Idaho Judge Blocks Controversial Bathroom Bill Affecting Transgender Students

Last week, U.S. District Chief Judge David C. Nye of the District of Idaho granted a temporary restraining order against a contentious state bill, Idaho Senate Bill 1100. This bill had proposed that public school students should use the bathroom or changing room corresponding with their biological sex.

Judge Nye opted to put the controversial bill on hold, allowing school districts to continue determining the organization of their bathrooms and changing facilities as the state’s public schools began on August 16.

In his judicial order, Judge Nye recognized the complexity and significance of the issues in this case and emphasized the need to maintain the status quo until the court could properly rule on the merits of the action. He posed the central question: “what is the status quo that must be preserved pending resolution of Plaintiffs’ PI Motion?”
