Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy Success Raises Concern for US Firms Retaining Top Talent

Upon the launch of Canada’s novel Tech Talent Strategy, the pressing demand led to the commencement of its first program to close in less than 48 hours, prompting speculation over the potential impact on U.S. tech firms in terms of talent loss. The Tech Talent Strategy, introduced by Canada in June, comprises four initiatives aimed at attracting tech professionals. The overwhelming demand for the first initiative led to the rapid filling of all 10,000 slots in just over a day. This initial program welcomed 10,000 H-1B visa holders in the U.S. to apply for three-year work permits in Canada. Notably, this permits visa holders to work for any Canadian firm and also extends to their immediate family members.

Praveena Nallainathan, an attorney specializing in corporate immigration, nationality, and consular law at Quarles & Brady, pointed out the high volume of STEM and tech talent in the U.S. originating from India and China. She acknowledged the long green card wait times faced by these immigrants, despite their compliance with all pertinent regulations. In her view, the longing for permanence, which can be difficult to achieve in the U.S., may make such opportunities in Canada appealing.
