Unreasonable Client Demands: Consequences for Mental Health in the Legal Profession

Lawyers at all levels have identified unreasonable client demands as a major source of stress and anxiety, according to a recent survey conducted by American Lawyer. This is notably prevalent in ‘Big Law’, where out of approximately 2,500 attorneys surveyed, half indicated that unreasonable client demands had a negative impact on their mental health. A similar proportion stated that due to clients’ requirement, they hardly ever found the opportunity to take vacations. Disturbingly, more than half of the respondents felt that their clients showed little to no concern for their mental health.

It should be noted that high fees and a lack of pushback appear to exacerbate this harmful dynamic, contributing to the issue of undue client pressure. This prevailing situation sheds light on the need for a healthy attorney-client relationship that respects the well-being of the legal professional.
