The severity of the Hawaiian wildfire tragedy continues to escalate, with 114 confirmed fatalities and another 850 still unaccounted for. As the lives of locals are drastically affected by this disaster, it is crucial to recognize Hawai’i as more than an idyllic tourist destination.
Despite the ongoing crisis, Addleshaw Goddard, a renowned international law firm based in London with 1,400 lawyers, has decided to move forward with their Hawaiian-themed party. Concerns regarding potential insensitivity were considered by the firm’s internal teams, yet, they ultimately concluded to proceed with the planned celebrations. The firm defended this decision, expressing that it was not made lightly or without extensive contemplation.
“In light of the terrible events in Hawaii we of course considered cancelling or trying to re-brand the event”, said the firm, “but decided after great thought and some consultation to go ahead explaining to staff earlier this week that it was not a thoughtless and insensitive decision but one to which we have given considerable thought”.
In tandem with this contested event, the firm has planned a charity raffle to raise funds for the Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund. The Addleshaw Goddard Trust has also agreed to match the funds raised during this event.
“Our thoughts are of course with the people of Maui”, said the firm, and now “a charity raffle will run on the evening with proceeds going to the Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund and the Addleshaw Goddard Trust has also agreed to match fund”.
While this gesture of goodwill is commendable and certainly beneficial to relief efforts, it does not completely absolve the firm of the criticism it has received regarding the appointed theme of the party. The firm reports having received no objections from their staff about the event or its theme, however, the appropriateness of such a party, given the current circumstances in Hawaii, remains questionable. Irrespective of the festivities, demonstrating respect for the ongoing tragedy through thoughtful actions should remain a priority.
