The International Legal Technology Association’s annual conference, ILTACON, is taking an unorthodox measure this year. Attendees of the event in Orlando, known for uniting professionals concerned with the overlap of legal practises and technology, are facing a $50 fine if they neglect to return their name badges post-convention.
These badges, better known as Klik SmartBadges, are not your typical tag-and-string identifiers. The SmartBadge is equipped with a clickable button that allows users to share contact information with other attendees. While the concept presents an innovative networking tool, the process for retrieving this shared information from the conference’s app remains unclear.
The caveat that appears to not have been openly communicated is the necessity for badge return at the end of the conference. Fail to comply with this requirement and a $50 fine will be levied. To aid in the return process, ILTA staff plan on placing baskets in various locations throughout the conference grounds, providing drop-off points for the badges.
However, if your schedule is tightly squeezed and you find yourself on a dash to the airport, it’s worth remembering the penalty for overlooking your badge return. A sprint to catch your flight could leave you footing a non-negligible fine.
