They say money can’t buy happiness, but according to some lawyers, perhaps it could buy a few functional laptops. Results from the 2023 Midlevel Associate Survey have highlighted significant technology hitches experienced in law firms. Many participants found it difficult to match their firms’ remarkable profits with their outdated tech infrastructure, including slow computers, dated software, and clunky document management systems.
Further study findings revealed that only 62% of associates claim their firms offered technology training, a noticeable drop from the 67% reported in 2022. The perception of firm-provided technology and associated training has also slipped, with fewer associates endorsing their firm’s efficient use of technology on behalf of clients. One Dechert associate was quoted saying, “We have too many (IT and technology) issues for a big firm and that impedes our efficiency.”
Despite the wealth contained within these firms, some of them seem to struggle with implementing modern, integrated technology. This discrepancy led some associates to describe their firms as struggling to cover the essential tech basics.
