About 100 Afghan women, hoping to receive higher education in Dubai, were halted on their journey by Taliban authorities. Sponsored by Dubai-based businessman Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, the women were provided with scholarships in conjunction with the University of Dubai.
In a public statement, Al Habtoor expressed outrage at the situation, citing a lack of justification for the Taliban’s actions, which he states has unjustly limited their freedom. The noted businessman’s efforts involved collaboration with various esteemed organizations, such as the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dubai Police.
The collaborative effort by Al Habtoor and his business, the Al Habtoor Group, had also sorted accommodation, travel, and health insurance for the women. They also responsibly managed the task of university admission and arranged a series of comprehensive services to ensure comfort and safety for the female students. Another statement from Al Habtoor has since confirmed that three Afghan women have safely reached Dubai, despite the obstructions.
Since the Taliban reclaimed control in Afghanistan in August 2021, women’s repression and human rights violations have drastically escalated. The Taliban’s rules forbid women from travelling more than 75 kilometers from their homes without a male escort. Additionally, education for women is restricted beyond the sixth grade, which often leaves women confined to their homes and unable to secure basic aid or employment.
Al Habtoor has called this incident a significant tragedy and a strike against the principles of humanity, education, equality, and justice. He insists on the intervention of all involved parties to save and assist these struggling students.
