In a rapidly changing legal market, Alternative Legal Service Providers (ALSPs) are presenting a credible threat to conventional law firms in Asia. According to a recent survey by Axiom Law, an alternative legal service provider, over 90% of the general counsel that were surveyed anticipate substantial cuts to their legal budgets due to global economic volatility. What’s more, 94% of them expect a hiring freeze this year.
A further report by Axiom reveals that 92% of 300 general counsel respondents across the Asia Pacific region believe they lack adequate in-house staffing resources to perform their duties effectively, a sentiment echoed by 45% of respondents who have also noticed an increase in the volume and complexity of their legal work.
These factors, coupled with a popping growth reported in the ALSP sector in recent years, suggest a change in the legal market landscape. It can be construed as a shift in attitude towards traditional law firm models and their offerings. With these elements taken into consideration, it seems that ALSPs may potentially disrupt the traditional way of conducting legal work in Asia.
