Kroll Cooperates with FBI After Bankruptcy Hacking Exposes Crypto Platform Data

Business and legal services provider Kroll has been cooperating with federal law enforcement following a hacking incident that potentially put customer data at risk. Affected customers are reported to be from bankrupt crypto platforms FTX, BlockFi Inc, and Genesis Global Holdco. The details were divulged when Kroll announced the incident on August 19th. Bloomberg reported that the company is actively cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Kroll had also immediately worked on securing the three accounts that were affected. Files stored in Kroll’s cloud system, believed to contain personal information of the above mentioned platform’s customers, were reportedly accessed in the hacking.

Security experts from Kroll have speculated that the breach could have been initiated through a SIM swap attack, primarily aimed at gaining access to a Kroll employee’s mobile number.

A statement released on the company’s website outlined the security incident and reassured clients and interested parties that a comprehensive investigation was now underway.

In response to the incident, Kroll has alerted their customers and begun taking further steps to enhance their existing security measures. This hacker’s attack exemplifies the growing concern over cybersecurity within the legal sector, an issue that is even more pronounced in industries such as crypto platforms where digital transactions are the core of business operations. This, in turn, highlights the paramount importance of robustly secure data storage and protective measures in safeguarding client information against potential threats.
