Actionstep, a New Zealand-based law practice management platform, has successfully expanded its influence by acquiring the Australian law practice management company, FilePro.
The acquisition, which includes FilePro’s 4,000-law-firm customer base in Australia, represents a substantial growth opportunity for Actionstep. Despite both companies serving primarily mid-sized law firms, the on-premises origins of FilePro offer a contrast to Actionstep’s cloud-based approach. However, FilePro had already been exploring the development of a cloud-based product – an ambitious project that the acquisition promises to significantly expedite.
Founded in 2004, Actionstep has consistently been expanding its reach, now boasting over 28,000 users worldwide- with an established customer base spanning across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and other locations. With its U.S. headquarters based in Denver, Colorado, the company continues to reinforce its global presence.
This growth has been supported by a number of strategic moves including an investment they received from Serent Capital, a San Francisco private equity firm focused on investing in high-growth technology and services businesses, in October 2020. This investment gave Serent a controlling interest in Actionstep.
In 2022, Actionstep made a similar expansion move by acquiring another Australian practice management company, LawMaster. As a testament to this sustained growth, the CEO of Actionstep, Early Stephens, who succeeded the founder last year, leads the business from its U.S. base.
