Microsoft Proposes Unbundling Teams App in Europe to Avoid Antitrust Scrutiny

In an attempt to deflect further European Union antitrust examination, Microsoft Corp. has proposed to separate its Teams video-conferencing app from a comprehensive business software bundling.

Nanna-Louise Linde, Microsoft’s Vice President for European government affairs, stated in a blog post on Thursday that starting from October 1st, Microsoft will start to unbundle Teams from Microsoft 365 and Office 365 across Europe.

The decision was made with the considerations of the Redmond, Washington-based company to prevent official antitrust charges from the EU and the risk of future penalties, after the EU decided to initiate an inquiry in July.

The investigation led by the EU is analyzing whether Microsoft contravened competition laws by combining its Teams application with other business software in a manner that may be viewed as anti-competitive.
