A highly anticipated US Labor Department proposal aiming to extend overtime protections to more workers is already facing possible legal challenges. The proposal bears parallels to a similar dispute over salary thresholds that resulted in the striking down of a rule from the Obama administration.
Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su, announced last Wednesday that the proposed rule would extend overtime protections to “millions more salaried workers who earn less than $55,000 a year”. However, the proposed salary limit triggering obligatory time-and-a-half overtime payment could potentially be increased to $60,209 in the final version of the rule, according to a footnote in the rulemaking text.
