Major law firm Goodwin Procter has implemented a system called ‘Colleague Connect,’ which will keep track of associate presence and specific location in office premises. Following the post-Labor Day expectation of in-office work at least four days a week, Goodwin Procter’s move might seem like an undue surveillance measure to some. However, the firm maintains its decision is aimed at improving office communication and productivity.
It should be noted that most law firms today apply similar tracking measures, facilitated mainly by card swiping systems. This new implementation merely offers individuals the opportunity to locate their colleagues within the office precincts. In fact, ‘Colleague Connect’ has been described in a previous Above the Law article as a model for managing future hybrid workplaces.
Goodwin Procter, which made significant gross revenue in 2022 and holds an esteemed 13th position on the Am Law 100, is deliberated on following a flexible attendance model. The Colleague Connect system has been designed to encourage and facilitate in-office interaction and collaboration, providing a daily snapshot of who is present and where. According to an unnamed associate, this system was appreciated as it eased the task of determining the in-office availability of colleagues.
However, associate trepidation towards system usage continues to persist, stemming from the firm’s recent history of outright layoffs and stealth layoffs. This concern, however, might be misplaced. It is suggested that this new system should be viewed more as a benefit than a burden – a tool aimed at promoting morale and happiness by making it easier to connect with colleagues in an office environment.
