Female General Counsel Outearn Male Counterparts, Yet Underrepresented in Fortune 1000

In a recent analysis by Corporate Counsel, in partnership with ALM Intelligence, it was found that female General Counsel (GC) at Fortune 1000 companies received slightly higher total compensation than their male counterparts in the last fiscal year. The study, which drew on pay disclosures by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, also noted a continued imbalance in representation, with female GC significantly outnumbered by males.

Numerically, female GC in Fortune 1000 companies still have fewer seats at the table, regardless of their higher average compensation. This data encourages discussions around equality and progression in top-tier corporate legal roles, not just in the United States but globally. As Melba Hughes from the recruiting firm Major, Lindsey & Africa puts it, “We still have gender pay gaps in many companies, so let’s keep making progress.”
