DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for South Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finalized its decision to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan. This provision which offers temporary refuge to people from countries affected by conflicts or natural disasters, will now cover an additional 18 months, effective from November 4, 2023 through May 3, 2025. Read the official notice here.

This extension has been necessitated by the ongoing armed conflict and other ongoing extraordinary conditions in South Sudan. It allows eligible South Sudanese nationals (and those without nationality who last habitually resided in South Sudan) currently living in the United States to continue living and working in the U.S. for the designated time period.

TPS beneficiaries trying to extend their status must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that runs from [Starting date] through [End date]. It’s worth noting that this extension does not apply to South Sudanese nationals who entered the U.S. after [specified date].

The significance of this extension is twofold: it provides much-needed relief to South Sudanese nationals residing in the U.S. and gives the South Sudanese government some respite to work towards resolving the ongoing conflict and extraordinary conditions.
