Philips, the electronics multinational conglomerate, has reached a settlement for $479 million in response to a swath of lawsuits brought forward by consumers. These lawsuits center around Philips’ recalled CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and other associated breathing machines, which have been connected to instances of cancer.
This class action settlement, confirmed last Thursday, is significant in that it solely resolves the economic claims made against Philips. However, it does not put to rest any claims regarding personal injury or medical monitoring. This effectively means that while the company is addressing financial reimbursements for their product’s recall, they are yet to confront potential legal issues stemming from any adverse health effects caused by these devices.
As part of the settlement, consumers who purchased the aforementioned, recalled devices will receive cash payments. Additionally, there is an incentive for those who return the faulty equipment, with a $100 award being offered.
