Sri Lanka Forms Parliamentary Committee to Investigate Official Involvement in 2019 Easter Sunday Bombings

The Sri Lankan government recently announced the establishment of a special parliamentary committee to investigate the involvement of top government officials in the tragic 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.

These findings follow allegations by UK media outlet Channel 4 regarding the complicity of Sri Lanka’s top intelligence official in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, a horrific attack involving six suicide bombings which targeted churches and luxury hotels, causing over 290 fatalities and leaving hundreds of others injured.

A video released by Channel 4 featured an interview with Azad Maulana, a Sri Lankan man who accused a government and military intelligence official of being complicit in the attacks. Maulana also alleged that the motivation for these attacks was to stir up national security concerns, thereby aiding in the election of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa, a one-time defense official, took office in November 2019 and was replaced by Ranil Wickremesinghe in July 2022.

Rajapaksa denied these allegations, labeling Maulana’s claims as “absurd.” He went on to assert that the accused official informed Channel 4 that he was not even in Sri Lanka when the alleged meeting was conducted.
