Leading international law firm, Slaughter and May, has taken a notable step by agreeing to meet with a climate pressure group called Lawyers Are Responsible (LAR). LAR, a group of lawyers advocating for legal firms to sever ties with the fossil fuel industry, has previously written to other prominent law firms, including Allen & Overy, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, and Clifford Chance. However, Slaughter and May is the first among the Magic Circle law firms to show willingness to engage with the group and its concerns regarding the climate crisis.
The decision by Slaughter and May signifies an increased awareness and response to calls for environmental responsibility within the legal profession. LAR’s campaign encourages lawyers to pledge their commitment to withhold their services on matters related to new fossil fuel projects, aiming to actively limit legal support for such ventures.
