FinCEN Warns Financial Institutions of ‘Pig Butchering’ Crypto Investment Scams

The U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) gave out an alert on September 8, urging financial institutions to stay vigilant against a notorious virtual currency investment swindle known as the ‘pig butchering’ scheme. This artifice is currently the focus of U.S. law enforcement due to the colossal financial losses incurred by victims across the United States.

‘Pig Butchering’ is a term used to describe a meticulous, cruel scam technique. The process begins with fraudsters building trust with potential victims over a lengthy period, typically six months to a year or longer. After establishing a close, trusting relationship, the scammers then incite their victims to make significant investment towards counterfeit business or investment opportunities, thus ‘butchering’ the ‘pig’.

In its effort to caution financial institutions, FinCEN amplifies the importance of identifying red flags associated with the scam, with the paramount objective being to safeguard customers and throttle the fraudulent operations. Apart from the adverse impact on the victims, these scams present a significant risk to financial institutions as well, as they can potentially be used as vehicles for money laundering or funding illicit activities.

While the world of virtual currency investment can offer substantial returns, it is not exempt from its share of pitfalls. A stark reminder of this risk is reflected in US law enforcement’s approximation that victims of such scams have already lost billions of dollars. Institutions, therefore, play a crucial role in shedding light on these operations and protecting investors from such devastating losses.

As part of their ongoing efforts, FinCEN and other law enforcement agencies continue to promote attentive surveillance, precise documentation, and comprehensive reporting of such suspicious activities. Nonetheless, it is the collective effort of financial institutions, law enforcement, and potential victims alike that can provide a bulwark against the spread of such malicious actions.
