In a continued escalation of opposition scrutiny, security forces in Syria reportedly fired live rounds at anti-government protestors in Sweida, a predominantly Druze city in the southwest of the country. According to correspondent remarks relayed through Suwayda 24 news publication, the event took place near a local Ba’ath party building—a hotbed of power for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad—after protestors aimed to halt its operations.
The report asserts that these weapons were not just a show of authoritative presence but were indeed discharged at the gathering, leading to the injury of at least three individuals. The wounded, during an interview following the incident, expressed gratitude to Druze leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajari for his condemnation of the ruling Ba’ath party. Indicating the unity of their community against President al-Assad, they assured that their efforts to remove him from power would continue to be nonviolent.
The anti-government protests have been swelling for several weeks in Sweida, a residential area for many Syrian Druze minority members. The civilian movement focuses on eliciting the resignation of al-Assad amidst a brutal civil war and an engulfing economic crisis.
Conversely, Syrian state media has contested these claims of peaceful protest. Al-Watan, a publication owned by a cousin of al-Assad, suggests that the official authorities had effectively secured the sphere around the Ba’ath party building and were incited to act by local factions.
Analysts have interpreted the previous restraint exerted by security forces as attempts to mitigate the repetition of the country’s Arab Spring protests of 2011, which ultimately ignited the Syrian Civil War.
In the aftermath of the attack, Western countries have rallied in support of the protestors. UK Special Representative for Syria, Ann Snow, has demanded that the regime desist from civilian attacks and engage in substantial dialogue per guidelines of UNSCR 2254. This reference is to UN Security Council Resolution 2254 of 2015, urging the Syrian government to initiate peace discussions with rebel militias.
