Joint Commission’s Sentinel Alert Addresses Rising Cybersecurity Threats in Health Care Industry

In recent news, the Joint Commission has issued a Sentinel Event Alert on the increasing prevalence of cybersecurity threats in the health care industry. This call comes at a time where the rise in cyberattacks and breaches has been undeniable within the sector.

According to IBM Security’s 2023 annual report, the average health care data breach currently stands at a staggering $10.93 million. Furthermore, the health care industry has held the unfortunate title of the sector with the most expensive data breaches for 13 consecutive years.

Demonstrating the growing concern, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revealed that in 2022 alone, data breaches exposed more than 51.9 million patient records, affecting health care entities of all sizes.

This Sentinel Alert by the Joint Commission aims to emphasize the criticality of the matter and encourage extensive steps towards heightened cybersecurity in the health care industry.
