Last year, a significant 8.1% decrease was reported in the average profits per equity partner (PEP) across the top 50 law firms in the UK. This decline, as reported by Law.com, represents the most substantial downturn in PEP since the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The current average PEP stands at £862,100; a staggering reduction mainly attributed to hostile market conditions, swelling costs, and a rise in equity partner numbers.
This downturn in PEP marks the first time the figure has receded from the numbers of the preceding year since 2015. This drop exposes a worrying trend for Britain’s largest law firms, who will have to navigate these challenging market conditions while managing increasing costs and a growing number of equity partners.
