UniSuper General Counsel’s Unique In-House Approach Aims for Superannuation Excellence

UniSuper General Counsel Luke Barrett embodies a distinctive approach to his in-house practice. Nearly 20 years ago, when switching from private to in-house, Barrett made a fundamental promise to himself. Far from relying upon outsourcing for unfamiliar or complex issues, he disallowed himself the luxury of limiting his professional knowledge to the point of his transition, leaving private practice.

“The bargain that I made was that if I was going to move from private practice to in−house, I wasn’t going to rule a line under the level of knowledge that I had on the day I left private practice. I wasn’t going to timidly outsource any query that I hadn’t dealt with before or didn’t know the answer to,” said Barrett.

UniSuper’s Luke Barrett is aspiring to forge a path towards building the finest superannuation team in Australia. A lofty ambition, firmly rooted in a determined conviction to consistently expand his knowledge base and his commitment to in-house legal work.
