Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Acquitted in Impeachment Trial

A significant development came to light over the weekend as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton resumed office after being acquitted on all 16 charges leveled against him in his impeachment trial.

The roots of this case first emerged in May 2023 when Paxton was impeached by the Texas House of Representatives. The charges related to allegations that he had made legal decisions specifically geared towards benefiting a real estate developer named Nate Paul, who Paxton allegedly had personal connections with. Further, he was accused of terminating whistleblowers who potentially threatened to disclose this information. The House voted decisively for impeachment, with a vote count of 121 to 23.

The matter then moved to the Texas Senate for consideration. Of note in these proceedings was the fact that Paxton’s wife, Senator Angela Paxton, attended the trial but ultimately abstained from the vote.

Following the proceedings, Paxton issued a fervent public statement where he argued that the impeachment was a sham, orchestrated by the Biden administration in cooperation with the House Speaker, Dade Phelan. He also condemned the perceived weaponization of the impeachment process.

In the wake of the trial’s conclusion, various members of the Texas Senate released statements both celebrating and criticizing the outcome of the trial and the impeachment proceedings.

Despite the controversy, Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan stood firm in his support for the House’s decision to impeach. He thanked the House Board of Managers and their legal team, along with the House Members who supported the impeachment, in a statement following the verdict. Their actions, he said, gave Texans the chance to hear the evidence in a public trial as envisioned by the state’s founders.
