Despite various market challenges in 2022, law firms in the Asia Pacific region continued to experience growth, as reported in the 2023 Asia 50—a ranking of firms in the Asia Pacific region by the head count. The total number of lawyers at the 50 largest firms in the region grew by 11.8%, reaching a total of 103,174. This is slightly up from the 9% growth in head count reported for the previous fiscal year.
Interestingly, growth predominantly came from the top 15 largest law firms, all of which are based in China and employed more than 1,700 lawyers each. Notable firms displaying this growth included the DeHeng Law Offices, Jingsh Law Firm, W&H Law Firm, Grandall Law Firm, and King & Wood Mallesons, which each recruited over 300 lawyers during 2022.
While this overall growth is a positive sign, other indications suggest that certain parts of the region might have experienced slowed growth. Specialist analysis identifies China’s mid-tier firms as key drivers of this expansion.
