The dynamics of the public company Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance market have proven to be quite turbulent in recent years. The past five years have seen remarkable shifts, with reports detailing continual variations well into 2023. The landscape has certainly been akin to a roller-coaster ride for all stakeholders involved.
Analysis based on data from Woodruff Sawyer indicates that such fluctuations are indeed widespread. In the latter half of 2021, for example, about 71% of public companies renewing their year-over-year program experienced a rise in price. A stark deviation emerged only a year later, however, with 87% of these public companies attaining a decrease in total costs.
As we look towards 2024, these developments underscore the need for a practical, forward-thinking approach towards D&O insurance renewals. To mitigate risk and navigate this fluid market effectively, companies will need to strategize carefully around their insurance renewals, taking into account the evolving landscape’s potential implications.
