Thomson Reuters and Casetext Discuss AI Integration and Future Developments at ILTACON 2023

The $600 million acquisition of Casetext by Thomson Reuters (TR) was consummated on August 17, 2023. TR is an established industry stalwart renowned for its extensive legal content, while Casetext is a foremost authority in the rapidly evolving field of legal artificial intelligence (AI). The International Legal Technology Association’s flagship conference (ILTACON) held on August 21, 2023 offered a platform for both TR and Casetext to discuss distinct industry survey findings, product plans, expert opinion on AI trends, and likely future developments in the TR/Casetext sphere.

In one of the company update sessions, TR gave insights into key ideals shaping the development of their AI offerings in relation to the Casetext acquisition. Emphasis was placed on dovetailing their comprehensive legal content with Casetext’s technical prowess. The company cited other examples of similar strategic alignments, such as the Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI-driven undertaking meant to deliver unrivalled AI capabilities to the TR product portfolio.

Aside from sharing results from their future of professionals study, TR also discussed their comprehensive strategy to utilizing generative AI to enhance their product line and creating a secure environment underpinned by eight TR AI Principles and Ethics. Product enhancements including “Ask Westlaw,” “Ask Practical Law,” and AI integrations to their Intelligent Drafting, and Intelligent Document Review products were also touched on.

Meanwhile, Casetext CEO, Jake Heller, had the opportunity to update attendees on recent strides within the company and the AI field.
