In a recent House Judiciary Committee hearing, US Attorney General Merrick Garland faced a barrage of criticism, with inquiries ranging from the accused leniency towards Hunter Biden by a Trump-appointed special counsel, to allegations of blindly targeting and criticizing actions by the Attorney General before January 20, 2021. However, one particular exchange caused quite a stir.
Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Wisconsin Republican, expressed his indignation regarding a clothing-optional event known as the ‘World Naked Bike Ride’ which took place in Madison, Wisconsin a couple of months ago. Critics of the event see it as an inappropriate display and protest against the use of fossil fuels, while supporters believe it promotes body positivity.
According to the Republican congressman, he had written a letter to the Attorney General asking about his stance on the matter, but Garland seemed somewhat taken aback by this question during the hearing. He looked visibly confused when berated about a supposed child’s exposure to the nude bicycle riders.
“Sounds like you’re asking a question about state and local law enforcement. We get hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of letters,” Garland stated according to Above The Law. He also mentioned that he would inquire with the Office of Legislative Affairs about the congressman’s letter.
After hearing Garland’s response, the congressman concluded the exchange by criticising the Attorney General for failing to take action when local law enforcement agencies did not. The representative, however, did not clarify the specific federal equity impacted by a group of Midwest riders opting to ride naked in protest.
Ending the conversation abruptly, Tiffany stated, “It’s obvious you’re not. I yield,” seemingly perceiving his final statement as a decisive argument.
