Julia Rix, a former equity partner at the Polsinelli law firm, has filed a significant lawsuit against the firm and two senior partners, Gabriel Yomi Dabiri and Dov H. Scherzer. In the lawsuit, Rix alleges that she was a victim of persistent sexual harassment over the course of her time at the firm. The lawsuit accuses the firm of maintaining a workplace ridden with mistreatment and misconduct, and points towards a culture that remains indifferent to such situations due to the ‘tone at the top.’ Above the Law reports.
The claim, which was filed on September 15th in the Washington, D.C., civil court, asserts that Polsinelli’s ‘callous gaslighting’ in response to Rix’s sexual harassment allegations was shocking but not unexpected, given the firm’s history of ignoring discriminatory treatment of covered personnel. It further accuses the firm’s leadership of disregarding sexual harassment and promoting individuals to positions of power solely based on inappropriate workplace relationships.
In marked contrast to its public image, the firm, in fact, is alleged to hide behind layers of confidentiality agreements and forced private dispute resolution provisions when faced with accusations of discrimination and workplace abuse. Furthermore, Polsinelli is accused of prioritizing the protection of its leadership over addressing victims’ needs and rectifying the underlying issues.
Rix’s lawsuit includes allegations of ‘unprofessional demands’ made by the defendant partners, involving ‘bait-and-switch tactics,’ and meetings that were supposedly about case strategy or client development but were used as opportunities to harass her. The misconduct extended to instances of repeated harassment by senior partners, including requests for after-work drinks, hotel ‘meetings’ and unsolicited comments about her appearance.
The complaint maintains that when Rix refused to submit to such harassment, her practice did not receive the support it needed from influential figures such as Dabiri and Scherzer, causing adverse impacts on her status within the firm. Expressing her concerns to the human resources department resulted in her dismissal from the firm without any preceding investigation.
Rix is now seeking $20 million in the lawsuit, which includes claims for breach of contract, violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, violations of the Washington, D.C., human rights law, and infliction of emotional distress. The defendants are yet to comment on the lawsuit.
William A. Brewer III, Julia Rix’s attorney, has made a statement regarding the case indicating that his client, like many women in the legal industry, alleges she was subjected to unwanted sexual harassment by senior leaders in the firm. The claim further states that Polsinelli failed to investigate her allegations appropriately, revictimizing her in the process. The lawsuit seeks to expose a culture of harassment that has victimized many and has been deliberately hidden from the public. Brewer explains.
