In a realm where tales of attorneys exiting law practice to helm legal technology enterprises are commonplace, certain individuals stand out with their noteworthy entrepreneurial success. Among such individuals is Matt Spiegel.
Originally a criminal defense lawyer, Spiegel ventured into the legal tech field in 2009, establishing MyCase, an early champion of cloud-based law practice management. Sold by Spiegel in 2012 to AppFolio, he subsequently moved on from the company in 2015 to forge a different path, this time focusing on software development for trade show and event management.
Spiegel returned to the legal sector in 2017, founding his current endeavor, Lawmatics. Built as a client relationship management (CRM) platform for legal firms, Lawmatics came into existence due to a distinct void Spiegel recognized in the legal market.
Conversing on episode 16 of LawNext podcast in 2018, Spiegel revealed that he designed Lawmatics to help firms automate their marketing efforts and restructure their businesses to function like sales organizations. Since then, Lawmatics has successfully raised $12.5 million in funding, augmented its platform with time-and-billing and e-payment capabilities, and introduced a generative AI feature that aids law firms in composing and editing client emails and marketing campaigns.
Spiegel’s entrepreneurship journey and his vision for Lawmatics were the core topics of a recent episode on the LawNext podcast. He chronicled his experience as a serial legal tech entrepreneur, elaborated on the reasons for founding Lawmatics, and described how the platform automates legal marketing and fortifies relationship management. Furthermore, he also shed light on his future plans for both the enterprise and the platform.
