Lengthy, multiyear compensation guarantees, which are often part of the package when partners make lateral moves in law firms, may be losing popularity, according to some signals from the industry. In a recent survey, just over one in 10 lateral partners reported receiving such guarantees for more than two years.
These types of agreements can offer a degree of stability and help both parties adjust to new circumstances, protecting partners from the inherent risks of such a transition. However, on the flip side, they can also convey a lack of commitment or, in extreme cases, cause resentment among other partners.
Despite the benefits to individual partners, the decreasing prevalence of these lengthy pay guarantees suggests a shift in the industry’s stance towards these arrangements. The extent and implications of this trend are yet to fully emerge, and the industry will be closely watching how it unfolds.
