US prosecutors have recently brought forth an
indictment
against Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), his wife, Nadine, and three businessmen. The senator is accused of leveraging his position to provide assistance to these businessmen in financial situations and pending criminal matters, as well as aiding the government of Egypt, reportedly in return for bribes. Senator Menendez has
denied
these allegations.
The indictment outlines multiple alleged bribery schemes spanning 2018 through 2022 in which the Menendezes received over $500,000 in cash, gold bars valued at around $100,000, a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, and a $23,000 mortgage payment. These schemes reportedly included individuals named Wael Hana, Fred Daibes, and Jose Uribe.
The indictment additionally suggests that Menendez intervened in the
federal prosecution of Fred Daibes,
and in legal proceedings pertaining to two associates of Uribe. All defendants are facing charges of
conspiracy to commit bribery and
conspiracy to commit honest services fraud.
US Attorney Damian Williams has
reiterated his office’s dedication
to thoroughly quashing public corruption, stating that partisan politics will never sway their commitment to justice. This formal indictment was presented two days after NBC News 4
disclosed
that Menendez was under investigation for corruption.
Menendez was previously
charged
with various corruption offenses in 2015 for allegedly accepting over $600,00 in bribes from a friend, the ophthalmologist Salomon Milligan. However, a jury
could not reach a verdict
on these charges, stalling the process in November 2017. These cases resulted in Menendez being
acquitted
on 7 out of 18 charges in January 2018, and the US Department of Justice (DOJ)
discontinued the remaining accusations
shortly after.
