Russian Activist Kara-Murza Transferred to Siberian Maximum-Security Prison Amid International Condemnation

Imprisoned Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza has been transferred to a maximum-security prison in Siberia and placed in a tiny “punishment cell,” according to a Facebook post by his lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov. Kara-Murza was reportedly moved to IK-6, a maximum-security penal colony in Omsk.

Details of the transfer were revealed in a letter written by Kara-Murza himself. He noted being fatigued from the move, which took less than three weeks to complete. Previously, Kara-Murza was held in a pre-trial detention center in Moscow.

In April 2023, Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of treason, disseminating false information, and affiliation with an “undesirable organization.” He was an active member of the People’s Freedom Party (PARNAS), a prominent Russian opposition party that was subsequently liquidated by the Russian Supreme Court.

Human rights organizations and foreign governments have rallied around Kara-Murza since his arrest. For instance, the Canadian parliament honored him with honorary citizenship, and the United Nations urged Russia to release him. Both the European Union and United States condemned the conviction as “politically motivated.”
