Generative AI’s Influence on Billable Hours and Law Firm Pricing Models

Last year, generative AI made a significant impact, particularly among legal professionals. For years, law firms have been integrating more traditional forms of AI, including machine learning, into their practices, pushing towards a model that is both more technologically advanced and automated. However, the introduction of generative AI might leave a more substantial imprint.

Historically, the use of AI technologies in law firms didn’t notably reduce the prevalence of the billable hour model. Now, many legal professionals hope that generative AI will accomplish what earlier technologies could not. According to a 2023 Legaltech News Law Firm Tech survey with 36 participating firms, roughly 45% of respondents anticipate that generative AI will decrease their dependence on billable hours. 15% held the opposing view, whereas approximately 35% remain uncertain.

These developments raise the question of the extent to which AI, particularly generative AI, will disrupt law firm pricing models. The legal profession stands at the threshold of a potential transformation, the scale and impact of which will only be fully disclosed with time.
