IAASB Introduces ISSA 5000: A Step Toward Corporate Sustainability Transparency

The International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) is taking significant strides in encouraging transparency and accountability in corporate sustainability engagements. In August 2023, the IAASB introduced its proposed International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA) 5000, “General Requirements for Sustainability Assurance Engagements.”

Widely considered as an extensive sustainability assurance framework, ISSA 5000 is expected to bolster the faith that investors, regulators, and various stakeholders have in corporate sustainability information. The proposal of this standard is a critical move by the IAASB and reflects the increasing importance of adopting sustainable practices in global corporations and law firms.

The proposal indeed sets the stage for richer dialogue around sustainable practices and the future of the business law region. Legal professionals working in major corporations worldwide can benefit from fully understanding this proposed standard and its potential impacts – as it might shape future regulations and guidelines governing the sector.
