Law Firms Risk Cultivating Exploitative Environments, Australian Judge Warns

Senior lawyers may be fostering a culture of exploitation within law firms by imposing long and unreasonable work hours on junior staff, according to Australian High Court Judge Jayne Jaygot. Speaking about burnout within the legal profession, the judge expressed concern over work environments characterized by extreme hierarchies and pay differentials, where junior lawyers are given little autonomy and their time is considered less valuable than that of their superiors.

In her discussion, Jaygot referenced instances where senior lawyers would claim credit for work conducted by their junior counterparts, simultaneously shifting blame onto the juniors when mistakes were made. She indicated that such cultures could pose significant risks to the psychological wellbeing of young professionals in the legal field.
