FASB Adopts Updated Standards for Cryptocurrency Accounting and Disclosure

On September 6, 2023, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) approved an important Accounting Standards Update (ASU) which targets the accounting treatment and disclosure of cryptocurrency assets. Known as ‘Accounting for and Disclosure of Crypto Assets’, the update was approved as an adjustment to FASB Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topic 350, dually referred to as ‘Intangibles—Goodwill and Other’, initially proposed in March 2023.

Latham & Watkins LLP, reported that this new standard aims to improve accounting practices relating to certain digital assets under GAAP. This development might also stimulate higher levels of institutional adoption, as it addresses previously existing uncertainties surrounding the valuation and declaration of such assets.

  1. The Influence of the New Standard

The transformative effect of this new standard on the accounting domain is noteworthy. It not only provides a structured framework for handling certain digital assets under GAAP, but also bolsters the systemic robustness of corporate and institutional interactions with cryptocurrency and other digital assets.

  1. Impact on Institutional Adoption

As the cryptocurrency market continues to expand and mature, more corporations and institutions are considering integrating digital assets into their operations and financial planning. With clearly defined GAAP guidelines, the newly-adopted standard could potentially drive increased institutional engagement with digital assets by way of reducing the perceived financial risks and reporting complexities.

  1. Looking Ahead

This recent FASB adoption signifies its strategic commitment to adapt traditional accounting methodologies to encompass rapidly emerging forms of digital assets. Moving ahead, it will be vital for both legal and accounting professionals to stay abreast of these regulatory advancements, in order to adequately advise their clientele in navigating this increasingly digital financial landscape.
