The online learning environment, infamously dubbed as the “Zoom School of Law” during the pandemic, has precipitated a major development in the sphere of legal education. Guilding a path to mainstream online learning, the Southwestern School of Law is set to introduce the first fully online J.D. program. The program, which offers both full-time and part-time education options, comes with an asynchronous curriculum, allowing flexibility to law students and legal professionals alike.
Southwestern School of Law, renowned as one of the best institutions for careers in entertainment law, has been credited for this progressive leap into the 21st-century approach to legal education. Amongst its distinguished alumni, the institution boasts of having served as the academic grounds for Camille Vasquez, Johnny Depp’s attorney.
In their recent statement, Southwestern revealed that their new online program would uphold the same high degree of rigor and quality found in their traditional residential J.D. programs. This marks an effort to accommodate individuals who, due to certain personal or professional commitments, are unable or prefer not to disrupt their careers or relocate for pursuing a law degree.
Online students will be given the full freedoms and experiences typical of traditional schooling, including participation in externship programs and clinics, concentration programs, academic journals, advocacy teams, and student clubs. The asynchronous format of the course offers flexible access to course materials, discussions, and assignments based on the students’ convenience, thereby accommodating varied schedules and time zones.
In a commending statement, University President and Dean Darby Dickerson disassociated comparisons with ‘Zoom U’ and assured potential students of a carefully considered, well-structured online course that facilitates meaningful interactions among faculty and students, despite its emphasis on scheduling and geographic flexibility.
Applications for the pioneering course will open this month, setting the customary stage for the inaugural class to commence in the fall of 2024. Further detailed coverage of the Southwestern’s Online J.D. Program can be accessed at the Law.com report.
