It was recently reported that federal prosecutors are advocating for a life sentence for Billy Ortega, a drug dealer who is linked to the tragic death of Julia Ghahramani, a prominent 26-year-old associate at Akin Gump, due to his sale of fentanyl-laced cocaine in New York City. This coverage comes after our review of Ghahramani’s untimely passing in March 2021.
Ortega was convicted in January on several counts, including one count of narcotics conspiracy leading to death, three counts of narcotics distribution resulting in death, and one count of use and carrying of a firearm in furtherance of the narcotics conspiracy. Ortega has reportedly requested a sentence of no more than 25 years for these crimes. His sentencing is set for October 4.
The death of Ghahramani, a Columbia Law School 2020 graduate, and two other professionals in New York has sparked conversations around the dangers of fentanyl and its rising presence in other drugs, significantly increasing the risk of overdoses and fatalities. In light of these devastating events, harm reduction resources, such as this general guide on navigating fentanyl use, have been heavily circulated within professional communities to increase awareness. Fentanyl testing strips have been posed as potential preventatives, with manufacturers DanceSafe and BTNX being popular providers of these strips. You can find more about these tests here and here.
As proceedings remain ongoing, we continue to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Julia Ghahramani. If you wish to support her legacy, contributions can be made to the Julia Ghahramani Foundation.
