Attention legal professionals handling corporate telecommunications and regulatory law: please be advised of an important announcement regarding the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in the United States.
As reported by JD Supra, at 2:20 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 4, 2023, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the EAS. Commencing two minutes earlier, at 2:18 p.m., a test of the WEA will also be conducted.
The EAS and WEA are central components of public safety infrastructure and are designed to deliver critical messages to the American public. These systems are leveraged in times of severe weather and other emergencies, when urgent notification can mean the difference between life and death.
This test, like others conducted in the past, will serve to ensure the effectiveness of these emergency communication systems. For corporate legal teams handling regulatory compliance, especially those in telecommunications, it’s important to consider the potential impacts of these tests and to anticipate any legal concerns that may arise.
A secondary test date has been reserved for October 11, 2023, in the event conditions on October 4 necessitate the rescheduling of the tests.
Stay informed and be prepared to adapt to any new developments surrounding this crucial nationwide safety initiative. As always, the importance of ongoing compliance with regulatory mandates such as these cannot be understated.
