FTC Tackles Generative AI’s Impact on Creative Economy and Competition Rules

On October 4, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hosted a virtual roundtable to discuss the implications of generative AI on the creative economy. This meeting enabled the FTC to hear directly from creators whose work and livelihoods may be affected by the emerging technology.

In her address to the audience, FTC Chair Lina Khan underlined the Commission’s critical role in enforcing rules of fair competition. Explicitly, Khan stated that technological advancements do not exempt any participant from adhering to the existing legal framework. Specifically, the laws against unfair methods of competition or collusion, discrimination, and deception remain fully applicable.

Furthermore, Khan highlighted the FTC’s commitment to ‘keep pace’ with the rapidly evolving tech landscape. By staying informed and understanding how new technology like generative AI is used, the Commission aims to mitigate any potential negative impacts that may arise.

This roundtable forms part of the FTC’s ongoing efforts to engage with the broader community in intricate policy discussions. By holding such discussions, the FTC is taking proactive steps to ensure that it can respond effectively and promptly to the challenges and opportunities of AI-enabled innovation in the creative sector.
