Between October 3rd and 5th, the Attorney General Alliance (AGA) assembled a series of working group gatherings in Boston. These concentrated on matters currently at the forefront of state Attorney Generals’ concerns: cybersecurity, organized retail crime (ORC) and cannabis policies. These significant topics were brought into focus during the meeting, following an introduction by the host, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell.
The meeting commenced with a trio of sessions and an encompassing roundtable, all dedicated to the complex intersection between cybersecurity and cryptocurrency. The roundtable provided a platform for detailed discussions and comprehensive knowledge-sharing in an area presently seen as pivotal to the maintenance of law and order in the realm of high-tech industries and beyond.
The working groups also tackled the pressing issue of organized retail crime (ORC). This form of crime, characterized by highly coordinated theft and fraud targeting retail businesses, brings together multiple law enforcement and legal challenges and has been given significant attention by AGA, reflecting its growing menace to the retail industry and economy at large.
A further major issue discussed by these working groups was the matter of legalizing cannabis. As more states move to legalize the use of cannabis in varying degrees, the legal ramifications – including issues of regulation, enforcement, and the intersection with federal law – are of particular concern. Given the diversity of state laws on the matter, the working group is aiming to stimulate a concerted action strategy among state AGs that can navigate this complex and evolving legal landscape.
These extensive discussions and working groups facilitated by the AGA demonstrate the complex and urgent legal issues currently at hand. As these matters continue to develop and evolve, further meetings and collaborative work will be key to shaping the future direction of these important legal areas.
