In the midst of an unexpected terror attack by Hamas, several international Biglaw firms with offices in Israel have directed their associates to switch to remote working in response to the deteriorating conditions within the country. Among these is Greenberg Traurig, noted for having one of the largest international law firm offices in Israel, housing 19 lawyers in Tel Aviv. This region has been one of the main targets of the Hamas militant group recently. The firm has extended support to its employees, ensuring their safety and aiding their transition to home-based operations. More details available on American Lawyer.
Boston-based Sullivan & Worcester, also with a significant number of law practitioners in Israel (16), expressed solidarity with their Israeli counterparts and clients during this crisis. The firm stated the safety of their employees is of paramount importance. They continue their operations remotely, in the face of the current distressing situation.
Other notable law firms with presence in Tel Aviv include Kennedys, CMS, Latham & Watkins, Freshfields, and Honigman. CMS, in particular, mentioned that their employees are safe and remain active working remotely; while they are shocked and deeply saddened by the harrowing circumstances, the firm remains hopeful for calmer times ahead.
Notwithstanding, the tragedy that is taking place forces us to question the capacity of employees to function effectively from home during these violent atrocities. Persistent violent attacks are levying an enormous mental and emotional burden on these individuals, likely affecting their ability to perform optimally in a professional capacity. Biglaw firms must consider granting their employees the necessary time off, for as long as these horrifying incidents persist.
The legal community has extended words of encouragement and support to Israel. However, the gravity of the circumstances requires more concrete action. Donations, moral support, and standing in unity with your Jewish coworkers and friends can send a strong message during these bleak times. The enduring spirit of the Israeli people is at the heart of overcoming these trials.
