Amidst the growing anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) sentiment prevalent among some conservative politicians and legal activists, the Mansfield Certification program by Diversity Lab persisted strongly. In fact, the program saw more than 240 U.S. and Canadian law firms achieving the Mansfield Certification in 2023 as reported by Diversity Lab. Furthermore, there was a unanimous decision among existing firms to renew their commitment for the following year, 2024. According to a press release by Diversity Lab, an additional 45 new large and midsize law firms have pledged to participate in the program for 2024.
These findings reveal a dedicated and growing commitment towards DEI within law firms across North America, despite the backlash and resistance to DEI initiatives in some quarters of the political and legal landscape. This reflects a resolve to institute and maintain concrete measures aimed at enhancing diversity and inclusivity in law firms. The steady increase in Mansfield Certifications is a testament to the resilience and persistence of the DEI efforts within the legal industry.
