Setting out on her own after launching her legal practice, Kimberly Bennett swiftly concluded that there was a more efficient system than the traditional billable hour for pricing her services. Her pursuit of steady pricing for her clients in intellectual property, coupled with a consistent income for herself, led her to adopt a subscription-based model for legal services. Charging clients a flat monthly rate turned out to be a successful venture, prompting Bennett to not only embrace this innovative model but also to promote it extensively. In her capacity as an evangelist, she regularly writes and speaks about initiating and expanding a subscription-based law practice.
In 2021, Bennett took a step further, channeling her enthusiasm for subscription services beyond law practice and into the realm of legal technology. She, along with Blaine Korte, co-founded Fidu, a cloud-based platform specifically tailored for lawyers aiming to set up and develop their subscription or flat-fee based law practices. The efficacy of this platform was recently acknowledged when Fidu was recognized with the Clio Integration Award for Best Practice of Law App.
During an interview on the LawNext podcast in August of 2020, prior to the founding of Fidu, Bennett shared substantial insights about her career, legal practice, and the adoption of the subscription model. The podcast’s recent episode zeroes in on Fidu, exploring how this platform can assist lawyers in transitioning from an hourly billing system to a subscription or flat-fee practice. The discussion also delves into Bennett’s journey from law practice towards entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on her experiences as a Black woman.
