Mitchell Wasek, an SMU Dedman School of Law student and son of Buc-ee’s co-founder Don Wasek, has been arrested under accusations of secretly filming house guests in the bathrooms of three different properties. The lawsuit alleges that the discreet recordings feature guests in unauthorized circumstances such as “using the toilet, showering, changing clothes and/or having sex”.
The case came into light in May when guests at the Wasek family lake house at Lake Travis, Texas noticed a camouflaged camera inside a charging port in the bathroom. This was subsequently handed over to the police. As per police documentation, these files unveiled recordings of 13 individuals in bathrooms at the lake house, as well as two other properties owned by the Wasek family – an Austin apartment and a residence in Telluride, Colorado. Furthermore, Amazon records show a trail to Mitchell Wasek for the purchase of the so-called “spy cameras”.
In response to the incident, SMU released a statement, asserting that the campus police has undertaken additional security measures at law school facilities, while also confirming that there was no evidence of any criminal conduct related to this case on their campus.
Wasek is now confronting 28 counts of invasive visual recording . He has posted bail amounting to $280,000 – $10,000 per count. If convicted, he faces the prospect of up to 2 years in jail for each count.
