HKIAC Secretary-General Dimsey Steps Down Ahead of Hong Kong Arbitration Week

Mariel Dimsey, secretary-general of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), has announced her decision to step down from her position, a role she assumed only 14 months ago. The announcement happens days before the Hong Kong Arbitration Week, which is scheduled to take place from the 16th to the 20th of this month.

Dimsey, a former partner at CMS Hong Kong and co-head of the firm’s international arbitration group, cited personal reasons for her decision. While a new secretary-general is sought, Dimsey will continue her duties at HKIAC for several more months.

The HKIAC posted a job advertisement for the secretary-general role on October 10, and a search committee has been established, led by retired Debevoise & Plimpton litigation partner David Rivkin and former Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen.

Before her appointment at HKIAC, Dimsey succeeded former Permanent Court of Arbitration’s senior legal counsel Sarah Grimmer, who joined Twenty Essex Chambers as an arbitrator in Singapore, following her six-year tenure as HKIAC’s secretary-general.

In her legal career, Dimsey held the positions of associate at both Hogan Lovells in Germany and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, and was made partner at CMS Hong Kong in 2019.

The HKIAC received submissions for a total of 515 cases last year, 344 of which were arbitrations, seeing a slight increase in arbitration submissions from the previous year, which recorded 277 out of 514 cases.
